Round 7 took us to the Waterville Golf Links in the village of Waterville on the southwest tip of Ireland. The town is located on the popular sightseeing route known as the Ring of Kerry. The scenery was excellent with mountains and the ocean.
The Waterville Golf Links is consistently rated one of the best courses in all of Ireland and the world. It is a classic links built on piece of land surrounded by water on three sides. There are no dramatic sand dunes like the other courses however this was a great test of golf with four beautiful finishing holes along the water.
After the round over a pint in the clubhouse we met the owner, an American, who spends half his year in Waterville. The clubhouse walls were covered in many pictures of famous professional golfers who made the trip to Waterville over the years. A statue of Payne Stewart is located near the 9th and 18th greens.
The game for the day was Flags. Each player received 80% of their handicap added on top of the par 72 for the course and when that last shot finished you plant the flag in the ground. As in previous Flag games most of the flags are planted on the 16th or 17th hole. But on this day Doug made it all the way into the clubhouse with his flag after a tour best 77. Well done Doug!
