Hurling is said to be the world’s fastest field sport.
The wooden stick is called the hurley.
The ball is called the sliotar. It has a cork centre and a leather cover.
1 point is scored for hitting the ball between the goalposts and over the crossbar. 3 points are scored for hitting the ball between the goalposts and under the crossbar into the net that is guarded by a goalkeeper.
Each team has 15 players, or hurlers, on the field. The player can carry the ball in his hand for no more than four steps. To carry the ball further the player must bounce or balance the ball on the hurley stick. Hand passes are allowed but only if the ball is slapped, not thrown.
Matches last 60 minutes.
Hurling is an amateur game only. There is no professional league.
